Break Even is part inside joke and part lifestyle/career goal.
The name comes from my brother, who dreams of becoming so wealthy that he’s able to open a sandwich shop that does not need to profit and only needs to “break even”.
This idea and mentality resonated with the rest of my siblings and it became an inside joke, eventually spawning similar ideas such as “Break Even Cafe”, “Break Even Clothing”, and “Break Even Dance Studio”.
To memorialize this idea, and as a gift to my siblings, I designed a shirt for Break Even employees.
I used imagery from family favorites:
- A joshua tree to represent our favorite national park and yearly family vacation spot.
- Spike from Peanuts (our favorite childhood media), who is our favorite of Snoopy’s siblings, and iconic desert native.
- The poodle with sunglasses is Jezebel, my toy poodle and family mascot.
The front logo has hand drawn lettering in a fragmented style that reflects the “Break” in Break Even, and a Joseph Campbell quote on the back that captures the mindset that comes with finding the still point or “Even” point in ones mind.
