I was part of a breakdance crew called the King Library Rockers, named after the Martin Luther King Jr. library where we practiced. The covered outdoor space with smooth floors made it the perfect hangout and practice spot.
Our crew became a fixture in the San Jose State Community, with students and library patrons often stopping to watch us practice, and even being asked to perform at various events around the city.
For our crew jackets, I wanted to pay homage to the library that became a second home for us. It’s impressive angular architecture reminded me of the sharp angles of the letters “KLR”, and the crown symbol as an obvious reference to the “King” aspect of the name.
Unfortunately the final proofs and designs are lost in a crashed hard drive, but the jacket lives on.
